Scleral contact lenses are specialized devices that can improve vision and reduce pain and light sensitivity in a variety of eye conditions.  Often times referred to as PROSE (Prosthetic Replacement of the Ocular Surface Ecosystem) devices, scleral contact lenses completely vault over the cornea and rest on the less sensitive white sclera.  By providing a fluid reservoir in front of the cornea, the device neutralizes visual distortions and lubricates the eyes.  This allows for immediate relief, comfort and crisp, clear vision in people with irregular corneas and severe dry eyes.

Conditions that can be treated and managed with scleral contact lenses include:

  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Keratoconus
  • Pellucid marginal degeneration
  • Corneal transplants
  • Corneal scars
  • Corneal degeneration and dystrophies (Terrien's, Salzmann's, Map-Dot, Reis-Buckler)
  • Graft vs. Host Disease
  • Neurotophic Keratopathy
  • Sjogren's Syndrome
  • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
  • Chemical or burn injuries to the eye
  • Post-refractive surgery (LASIK/PRK/RK)
  • Ectropion
  • Exposure keratopathy (nerve palsies, eyelid surgeries)

The team at Family Optometry Center of Santa Rosa provides extensive experience and expertise in custom-designing scleral contact lenses to each individual patient.  Our fitting process involves an initial medical eye examination, computerized topographies (corneal maps), anterior segment photography, and scleral contact lens diagnostic fitting.  If you would like to learn more or were a previously unsuccessful/poor candidate for contact lenses please contact our office (707.571.2020) or e-mail Dr. Jackson Lau to see if scleral lenses may benefit
